Google Business Profile Has Changed Again
Here's Why We're Still Using Individual UTM Tracking Across 100+ Locations
For years, Google Business Profile reporting has been one of the biggest frustrations for marketers managing multiple locations.
Website clicks could be tracked with carefully structured UTM parameters, but phone calls, direction requests and many other customer interactions lived inside Google Business Profile, while website engagement lived separately inside Google Analytics. Bringing everything together meant spreadsheets, Looker Studio dashboards and a lot of manual reporting.
That has finally started to change.
Google’s June 2026 Update
In June 2026, Google rolled out native integration between Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Google Business Profile.
For the first time, businesses can link their Google Business Profiles directly to GA4, allowing key Business Profile metrics to appear alongside website analytics. These include:
- Website clicks
- Phone calls
- Direction requests
- Messages
- Bookings
- Profile interactions
It’s a significant step forward for local SEO reporting and one that many agencies have been waiting years to see.
But Does That Mean UTM Codes Are Dead?
Not quite.
Google’s new integration is fantastic for giving business owners a single place to monitor overall local performance.
However, there are still limitations that become very apparent when you’re managing large multi-location organisations.
Google currently aggregates data across linked Business Profiles, meaning you can’t easily compare the performance of individual locations inside the native reports. The Business Profile metrics are also currently limited in how they can be filtered and analysed within GA4.
For agencies managing dozens, or even hundreds, of profiles, that’s simply not enough.
Our Recent Local SEO Project
Following a comprehensive audit for a national counselling organisation with more than 100 Google Business Profiles across the UK, we completely rebuilt their local content strategy.
Rather than publishing generic updates across every location, each profile now follows a structured programme of highly localised content.
Every campaign focuses on a single counselling theme — whether that’s anxiety, workplace stress, ADHD, relationship counselling, autism support or depression — but each post is individually written and tailored for its specific location.
This gives every profile unique, relevant content while reinforcing the wider authority of the brand.
Why We Still Use Individual UTM Tracking
Alongside every Google Business Profile post, we continue to implement dedicated UTM parameters.
Why?
Because they still provide location-level reporting that agencies and marketing teams need.
With carefully structured campaign naming conventions we can identify:
- Which location generated the website visit
- Which Google Business Profile post drove engagement
- Which campaign theme performs best
- Which services generate the highest conversion rates
- Which areas require further optimisation
That level of granularity simply isn’t available through Google’s native integration alone.
For organisations operating dozens of locations, that insight is invaluable.
The Best Approach? Use Both.
This isn’t an either/or decision.
The smartest local SEO strategies now combine:
- Native Google Business Profile reporting inside GA4 for high-level business insights.
- Structured UTM tracking for campaign attribution, location-level analysis and long-term reporting.
Together they provide a much clearer picture of what’s actually driving enquiries.
Local SEO Is No Longer Just About Rankings
Google Business Profile has become one of the most important lead generation channels for local businesses.
Success now comes from consistently publishing relevant content, maintaining accurate business information, encouraging reviews, monitoring performance and continually refining your strategy based on real data.
The businesses that treat Google Business Profile as an active marketing channel—not simply an online listing—are the ones seeing the strongest local visibility.
